Dawn turns a year older today! Thirty something and getting closer to 40!

Dawn,
How long have we been together now? You ARE getting old! :) Are you sure we got the right one from the hospital? What... a girl... I'm not the baby anymore? Why is she crying? What is that smell? Why won't she just go to sleep... and stay that way for a few minutes?!?!?!?!?! (Glad I came first!)
Anyway, our lives have taken many turns and twists since we began in the 70's huh? Who knew when we were little, all the places we would see and the things we would experience. God has blessed us with wonderful families and tremendous opportunities to serve Him all along the way.
Watching your family cross the northern border to reach the unreached with the Gospel has been a joy knowing that you are where few others have dared to go. When you were 2, I probably would have paid to ship you there if I could have figured out how (they would have sent you back though, I'm sure!). Growing up, I certainly took for granted the gift of a sister, and I realize more than ever that the home is truly God-ordained. He put us together for a reason, and I know that reason was for me to "show you the ropes." Boy, did I fail. You were so uncooperative! You didn't sleep. You talked from day one. You always moved. You never did play baseball cards my way, and your baby doll games were pathetically boring... Oh well,  at least I had someone to beat at board games, ATARI, ping-pong, basketball, Monopoly, LIFE, SKIP-BO, UNO, and whatever else you dared to try. We all know I was the champion of all those and more. And think of the ducks, rabbits, hamsters, and dogs we had. How did you break your arm falling- what 2 feet? And, really? Calling mom before you called 911 when the house was on fire?.... What about the constant flow of friends as we got older. How many different ones did we have stay with us over the years? We had a great childhood with great parents and grand parents. God was and IS good!
Looking back over the whole "experience," we survived well and were good friends. I will never forget how excited you were for me when my dream of singing in the quartet came to fruition. You were probably dumb enough to think I was the best at everything. You bragged on me always, even when I didn't deserve being bragged on. You and I kinda remind me of Charlie Brown and his little sister. You were always talking and enjoying life, and many times all I could think was "Good Grief......" And I loved it!
Now, ??? years later, you have finally started becoming what I planned for you to be. Just kidding. No really. Seriously, I am proud of you and Danny and your beautiful family. Pride, in this case, is acceptable. Who needed a brother? I had you, and you were exactly what God wanted for me, and I wouldn't change it for anything. Thanks for being the best "Little Sister" in the world. Hope you have a Happy Birthday!
Love you,
Gary (Melissa, Kayla, Kylie, & Kristen)

Mema turns 76

Today we spent the day with Mema on her 76th birthday.  We are so thankful for her and love her so much!
Enjoying a birthday lunch

Goodfellows, Mema, & Lil' Keith (Ashly had to leave a little early)

This is the only way to eat a "bloomin' onion"........at least according to my brother and I!  We slide the onion out and just eat the batter.  We do the same thing with apple turnovers.......we squish all the apples out and eat the crust part.  I know, I know...you all think we are weird, but at least we are weird together! ;-)

When I was a little girl my Mema made me a "tater-head" doll.  She made one for my girls back in the fall and here they are!  They are made out of pantyhose.  She also made the little dresses for them.

Here is my tater-head doll.   I got her out of the attic so she is a little "tired."  I remember the night  we made her.  We stayed up late waiting for Pa to come home.  I couldn't wait for her to be finished.  It was so neat watching a doll form out of pantyhose!  She made her hair from yarn and put make-up on her.  The eyes were pearls.  She even made little panties for her.  She used to have a dress on, but I don't know what happened to that.  She was definitely one of my special baby dolls!  I'm so thankful she took time to do that for me and that she is able to do the same for my girls.  What a special blessing!  We are thankful for the 76 years God has given her.

She also gave us her recipe book of most of her best recipes today.  They are all in her hand-writing and we will cherish them for years to come.  Some of the recipes came from her mother and my Pa's mother.  What a treasure!

Part 4-----Huge Blogger Catch up!!

This year, for the first time in several years, our church put on a Vacation Bible School. (July 18-22nd) It was exciting to see so many visiting children and the folks in our church get so excited in helping spread the Gospel.  We averaged over 25 kids each night ending with a service on Sunday night in which we did a big "push" to get parents to attend.  Our goal was not just to see children come, but to invite entire families to hear the Gospel.  We were so excited that many of them attended to watch a special slide show of their children as well as hear the Gospel preached!  So many of our folks got involved to make it a success.  We were so proud of our teens and the way they helped out as well.  Kayla played the part of "Cooper"....which was definitely the favorite of all the kids! :-)  She did a GREAT job!  The theme was "What's the word on the street?"  We focused on different words each night such as:  Faithfulness, Forgiveness, Gratitude, Compassion, & Grace.  We look forward to what God will do with the next VBS!

In August, our friends, the Friedleins invited us to Jim's change of command ceremony from Bogue.  We were very excited to attend and so honored to be invited!  It was our first time ever going to anything like that.  It was so neat to watch how it was done and see them honor Jim.  We were so proud of the speech he gave which gave honor to his Lord and to his family.  (p.s. one of my favorite parts of the ceremony is when they played "danger zone" on the loud speakers while out on the tarmac! :-) too cool!)  We finished off the afternoon with a ride on my brother's boat.  Jenny stayed the afternoon with us at my parent's trailer at Goose Creek and we grilled steaks.  Yum!

Kristen the Poet

Lately Kristen has been fascinated with writing poetry.  Here are two poems she wrote tonight and hopefully I can put my hands on some others she has written over the last few months to publish them.  She keeps asking me about getting her works published so I told her we would publish them on our blog!! :-) I hated poetry in school and its definitely not my forte.....so not sure where she is getting this fascination with it! :-)

American Flag
by Kristen Goodfellow

We see the American flag wave in the air
And it reminds us how much the soldiers have to bear
They all are having tough times in the battle fields
And we pray that all who are wounded might be healed.
We pray for them to be home
So we won't be alone.

Pirates
by Kristen Goodfellow

A pirate says "Arrrrghh"
Because he is very large
He wears a patch over his eye
And believe me, he is not shy.
He has wrinkles on his face
And he has a different taste
He has a long beard
And it is very weird
He has big toes
And a big nose

Great job baby girl!! Keep it up! :-)

Kristen absolutely loves to cook!!!  She helps me almost every day doing some sort of cooking and she's constantly making up recipes while playing in her kitchen.   Here are a couple of pics of her helping make homemade doughnuts from the Deceptively Delicious Cookbook.  They were very good! I love this cookbook by the way!  I got it thanks to inspiration from Keri!  It's a great way to get extra veggies!!!

TV Station Field Trip....Channel 12

Today we had the opportunity of taking a field trip w/ our homeschool group to Channel 12, the local television station. We went a couple of years ago and it was awesome, so we definitely took advantage of another visit! We learned about how much goes in to just one newscast and how much teamwork is involved. The girls really enjoyed the hands on activities in the newsroom. They put our group picture on the 12:00 news!

ARMY REUNION
In July we were privileged to be part of Gary's papa's 65th Army Reunion.  We picked up Memaw Goodfellow in VA Beach and she was able to spend a few days with us.  She enjoyed her first slurpee in years on the way back to our house! :-)  She looks forward to the reunion every year!  It is such an enjoyment for her as she reunites with old friends.  We were so excited to be able to be a part since it was held in New Bern this year.  Gary enjoyed helping Mr. Casey (his papa's army best friend) and his daughter plan for it.  They enjoyed a pontoon boat ride, spending time reminiscing, and a special banquet.  Memaw so generously treated us to the banquet.  We proudly stood as they called out for "B Company" in honor of Gary's Papa.  It was so neat hearing them talk about the war and the service they provided for our country.  We enjoyed spending quality time with Memaw, hearing her funny stories about when she and Papa dated, watching her show us how she used to jitter bug (hahaha!!! :-), and enjoy herself at the reunion.  We are so thankful the Lord has blessed our children with so many great-grandparents that they know, remember, and love.  We remind them often of that unique blessing that so many others do not have.  And although they have never met two of their great grandfathers, we are thankful for times such as this that we can preserve their memory.
